Juris DoctorTeacher of the LawThe J.D. or Juris Doctor is the professional law degree that nearly all attorneys possess. J.D. programs are offered in many countries, as well as, by American law schools. Length of Study The American Bar Association (ABA) requires a total of 58,000 minutes of instruction, which usually takes about 3 years for a full time student to complete. A few schools have combined the J.D. and bachelor programs, but most require a bachelor's degree and LSAT scores. There is no need to be concerned about your undergraduate major, because there is not a particular major prerequisite. However, undergrad grades and LSAT scores are determinants for law school admission. First Year Grind You will probably not have a choice of courses to take during your first year in the Juris Doctor program. The first year generally comprises a set of courses such as criminal law, civil procedure, and contracts. You may be given a very large workload your first year with many research writing assignments. The good news is that you will get to make more choices over the next two years. In the End You unfortunately can not do much to speed up or slow down the process of receiving your Juris Doctor. If you choose to get your Juris Doctor be prepared for a very fulfilling yet challenging career path. In order to gain admittance to the American Bar Association (ABA), you need to complete your Juris Doctor degree (or its equivalent--sometimes the exact name varies), pass the bar examination, and agree to a code of conduct. You will also be required to take continuing education classes to maintain your status. Schools are listed in alphabetical order by state then city.
