Time to Train
With 3,400 jails in the United States, and close to 12 million people annually processed through the system, it appears to be a great time for you to receive correctional officer training.

Training Criteria
Training to become a correctional officer requires that you be at least 18 to 21 years of age, hold a GED or high school diploma, and be a U.S. citizen. There are minimum hearing, eyesight, and physical requirements as well. Having a postsecondary degree or college degree would generally give you an edge. Do you have strong decision-making skills? Are you able to show sound judgment? If you feel you meet these criteria you have what it takes to become a correctional officer.

A Correctional Officer's Role
Correctional officers' responsibilities differ depending on the facility. A few of your primary roles will be to enforce the rules of your institution, impose order, and ensure inmate security.

Being Prepared For the Job
Correctional officers have a demanding career. You need to be prepared to work all hours of the day, rotating shifts with other officers. When a new inmate is brought into your institution, you know very little about his or her security needs. This represents the most dangerous aspect of being a correctional officer. Unlike other law enforcement officers, correctional officers have no policing duties outside of the institution where they work.
