Warden

What Does a Warden Do?
A Warden works for the Department of Corrections of a state or the federal government. A Warden has normally worked his way up until he holds the highest position at a corrections facility. He may get transferred to larger corrections facilities as he receives promotions. A Warden is in charge of the facility so he must be proficient at administrative and managerial duties. The Warden is not only responsible for the inmates housed in the facility, he is also responsible for the guards, the office staff, and all the other personnel involved in the day to day functions of the facility.

Who Becomes a Warden?
People who decide to pursue a career as a Warden must not only have knowledge of the legal system and law enforcement, but they must also gain experience at management. Operating a corrections facility is very much like managing a production plant or mid-sized business operations. A Warden must be able to delegate duties, but at the same time be fairly knowledgeable as to how all departments operate. Many Wardens start out as correctional officers and find they enjoy the administrative end of corrections also.

Is there Special Training or Education Required to become a Warden?
Most Wardens have at least a Bachelors Degree and many have Graduate Degrees. An Undergraduate Degree in Criminal Science can be helpful and classes in business, social work, and management would all be an asset to a Warden's career.

What Kind of Income can a Warden Expect to Make?
The income of a Warden can vary depending on whether they are working for the state or federal government, the size of the facility they are in charge of, and how long they have held the position. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics found that for 2008 the average salary for a Warden was $58,380 and some were making almost $90,000.
