State Trooper

What Does a State Trooper Do?
The duties of a State Trooper vary from state to state but in general they are responsible for enforcing the law within the boundaries of the state and outside the jurisdictions of county sheriff departments. They enforce the traffic laws on the highways and roads within the state. They also provide security for the Governor of the state and the buildings that make up the State Capital Complex. State Troopers may also coordinate investigations that involve several local jurisdictions and provide support for smaller police departments.

What Education is Required to become a State Trooper?
The educational requirements to become a State Trooper vary from state to state but all require a high school diploma or GED. Many states require either a year of post secondary school or military experience. Completing courses in criminal justice, law enforcement, and social work can be very helpful. A degree in criminal justice may not be required for employment, but it will definitely be helpful throughout the career of a State Trooper. Once hired all states have an extensive training program for their State Troopers.
