Private Security Officer

What does a Private Security Officer Do?
In this position, you would be generally responsible for securing the safety of people and the property of your employer. There are many types of security officers who work in a variety of situations. These might include:
  • Securing a retail store by protecting merchandise and working to eliminate theft and loss
  • Patrolling a designated area, such as a parking lot, to deter theft and damage to property and/or patrons of your employer
  • Supervising a team of other security officers to ensure safety and protection for large-scale events
How Much Education is Required?
One benefit of becoming a Private Security Officer is that there is not a great deal of education required to enter the field. Most employers require a high school diploma for entry-level positions. Some college, such as an associate's or bachelor's degree in criminal justice or homeland security, would be beneficial if you aspire to a supervisory or managerial position in private security.

What Salary do Security Officers make?
Your income will depend greatly on the type of position you select. For example, private security guards who are required to be armed generally require additional licensure and certification and can therefore command a greater salary. Unarmed guards tend to make less than armed guards, but can still earn annual wages ranging from $22,580 to $33,140 depending on location and specific job duties. Armed guards in higher-risk positions can earn as much as $61,690 per year.
