CriminologistCriminologists study criminal behavior to see how it affects society. As a criminologist, you would conduct research and gather and analyze data. Criminologists study why people make choices, and the consequences those choices have on individuals and society. They look at ways to control and prevent crime and delinquency. Jobs for criminologists Many criminologists become teachers, working in a collegiate setting. If you would go that route, you would log classroom hours and spend time researching, writing and consulting. Or you might work with law enforcement and go to crime scenes, autopsies and legal proceedings. Jobs also are found at state, federal and justice agencies, where criminologists conduct and write studies that help form policy. A look at the divisions of the American Society of Criminologists shows the diversity of the field:
Most criminologists study for a doctoral degree. With a master's degree, you might get a job outside of college teaching. With just a bachelor's degree, you might find work as a research assistant, management trainee or market analyst for a large corporation. Criminologists are considered to be sociologists, and average annual earnings for sociologists who taught at the college level were $71,250 in 2008, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Earnings for those engaged in scientific research were $77,780 in the same period while pay for sociologists working for a state agency was $51,450. |
