Border Patrol Agent: Danger and ExcitementA border patrol agent works as a law enforcement officer that protects the United States from illegal activities such as entry of illegal aliens or the import of illegal substances such as drugs into the country. Agents work for the Department of Homeland Security protecting the U.S. in a variety of locations such as the South American border, and international water boundaries. Also important is the immigration and customs enforcement involved in the protection of the U.S. from terrorist attacks by screening passengers, vehicles, shipments, searching for narcotics, agricultural products, and instruments that could be used to harm the citizens of the United States.An Effective Border Patrol Agent In order to be an effective border patrol agent, you must be physically fit, obtain training in marksmanship, and understand human rights as well as various tactical strategies. It is helpful to earn a degree in criminal justice, speak a second language such as Spanish, and be well versed in armed and unarmed defense. What to Expect In order to enter this field of employment, you must be a U.S. citizen, and pass an extensive background security check in which you, your family, and friends are interviewed and investigated to determine your suitability to become a border patrol agent. There is some danger involved in working within this profession, but if you like excitement then this is a career that is suitable for you. |
