Airport Security Officer: A Profession Key in National Security

Important to the safety of passengers around the globe that travel via airline is the service provided by the airport security officer. The airport security officer works for the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), which reports to the United States Federal Aviation Administration. The TSA was establish in 2001 to manage airport security in an effort to protect the passengers and staff from harm, help with national security, and counter terrorism.

The responsibilities of an airport security office include monitoring airline checkpoints by ensuring that the proper procedures are followed for boarding and debarking the plane. Important to the job duties provided are running the conveyor belt, x-ray machines, metal detectors, wand, and checking carry-on bags in an effort to detect explosives, look for forbidden liquids, powders, and materials that can be used in a hijacking, terrorist attack, or to create an explosive.

You must be able to provide excellent customer service while dealing with passengers that may be difficult and upset because of the delays due to the added airport security measures. Along with providing customer service, you are expected to maintain order, respond to alarms and bomb threats, and conduct risk assessments. Should you enter this career field, expect to be subjected to an extensive background check. Although, it may seem like a thankless job, the truth is that you provide an essential service that ultimately protects the country from those that wish to harm U.S. citizens.
