A Coroner Works to Discover the Truth behind an Individual's DeathIf you are the type of person that likes a good mystery, then perhaps a career as a coroner might be an interesting job for you. The coroner is summoned once an individual passes away. He or she reviews the site and evidence at the scene in an effort to determine if the death is caused by natural causes or foul play. If the individual's death seems suspicious, then he or she will request that a pathologist who performs an autopsy by conducting an extensive medical examination of the body.If the pathologist finds that the person died from other than natural cause, then the coroner holds an inquest to further investigate the cause of death, to determine whether the individual died from natural causes, accident, suicide, homicide, industrial disease, or other. Other duties include conducting pathological and toxicological analysis, to help with the investigation of the circumstances surrounding the death. Pieces to a Puzzle Helpful to entering this field is the study of natural sciences, emergency medical technology, and paramedicine. Essential to the entering this career field is the study of human anatomy, medical terminology, safety precautions and aseptic techniques, care for instruments, preparation of bodies for autopsies, apply tests to assist in autopsy exams, use of x-ray equipment, and record keeping. Additional courses include death investigation and notification, infant death investigation, public administration, report writing, law and national guidelines, time of death, and media relations.
