A Bailiff is Needed for Court Rooms Throughout the Country

Bailiffs are considered the security officers for the courtroom. They are also known as marshals or court officers. Unfortunately, unless, you have attended a court proceeding, you would not typically think about working in this profession. However, bailiffs are necessary to maintain order in what could be a highly charged atmosphere. You, as a bailiff, are the law enforcement officer in a courtroom, which may be either armed or unarmed.

Duties include:
  • Confirming that the courtroom is clean and prepared for the proceedings
  • Those attending are unarmed
  • For trials that last several days, the bailiff ensure that the jury does not interact with anyone outside the courts within the hotel or restaurant
  • Seize, search, and arrest individuals causing disturbances
  • Enforce courtroom order
  • Assist judges
  • Guard juries
  • Deliver documents pertinent to the case and need over site
Entrance in this field is in high demand, but a good education gives you an advantage over others. Helpful to entering this field is a degree in criminal justice. There are also courses available for bailiff that include training in bailiff responsibilities, professional conduct within a courtroom, human rights, conflict management, understanding of the criminal justice system, and behavioral science.

According to the 1008 - 09, Bureau of Labor Statistics, growth within this field is growing faster than the average because of the growing population, hence the growing number of incarcerations.
