Think You're Always Right? Think Again

No matter how good you are at arguing, phrasing your thoughts, or dancing around the issues, there are people in this world who can put you in your place. They're called lawyers, paralegals, and legal assistants, and they have a whole arsenal of weapons at their disposal to render even your best arguments obsolete. They know how to dissect an idea, flip it on its head, and use your own words against you. And through extensive research and careful preparation, they often know what you're going to say even before you know. Professionals in this field enjoy a certain fluency with language that would make even the most prolific poet blush. And at the end of the day, they often make very handsome salaries.

What Legal Degrees Can Do for You
At the lower end of the legal spectrum are paralegals who provide crucial administrative, writing, and researching support for law firms and offices around the country. Prepping briefs, scheduling appointments, looking up case histories, and proofreading arguments all fall under their general jurisdiction. Although no formal training is necessary for entry, the most successful candidates have associates training in paralegal studies or bachelors training in an unrelated field coupled with a certificate in paralegal studies. Armed with this certification, paralegals enjoy tremendous demand with the number of positions expected to increase by 22% through 2016 (twice the national average). The median salary hovers around $43K, which is very impressive given how few qualifications there are.

Lawyers usually require 3 years of law school coupled with the successful completion of his or her State bar exam. They provide a range of services from the financial to the legal. Writing wills, representing defendants, suing 3rd parties, drafting contracts, and officiating legal proceedings being some of the most popular. Median salary? Over $100K a year. So again, ask yourself, "think you're always right?"
