Earn an Excellent Salary as a Parole Officer

A parole officer monitors and assists ex-offenders to adjust to life outside of prison by assisting them to return to useful and productive lives. Ex-offenders are individuals that have served time in a state or federal prison and placed on parole when released. The release is conditional and under the supervision of a parole officer for a specific period.

Parole officers report to the parole board and develop recommendation and plans for clients before he or she is released. You are expected to arrange employment, education, social activities, community interaction, and give guidance and make arrangements for the ex-offender's families. You will keep track of the ex-offender and if he or she violates parole, you conduct investigations, which include conducting interviews, surveillance, search and seizures, drug testing, carrying a weapon, and make arrests.

You will spend time conducting dispositional and pre-sentencing investigations by interviewing the offender's families, victims, witnesses, police officers, and anyone that may have been affected by the individual's crime. As part of your duties, you will evaluate ex-offender's progress, conduct electronic monitoring, recommend a prison sentence, operate community corrections programs, counsel offenders, and coordinate substance abuse rehabilitation.

Your caseload may range anywhere between 20 and 120 active cases and involve working with individuals that have lead interesting lives. A bachelor's degree is required in either social work, criminal justice, psychology, or a related field. Some employers require a master's in any one of the above. The Bureau of Labor Statistics notes that the median annual salary for this position is $47,980, an educational investment is well worth the rewards.
